Why do some contact lens wearers prefer the longer term contact lenses? Seems everyone should be wearing daily?
When convenience and health are considered it seems that daily disposable contacts are a superior option. My question is why do some people prefer biweekly, monthly or even yearly contacts. Are those contacts perceived to be constructed out of better materials? Does the cost seem lower even though those contacts must be cleaned and stored each night?
So we’ve established daily contact lenses are more expensive. What about overall comfort. Are daily lenses more comfortable than biweekly, monthly lenses?

No, daily contacts (the ones you throw out at the end of the day) are very VERY expensive. Long term contact lens are cheaper, but also a pain in the neck to clean and disinfect everyday. They are also more likely to get infected.
If they are generally the same type, (soft lens) then they should not be that different form eachother in material.
Update: Daily contacts are generally more comfortable BECAUSE they are less likely to be contaminated. On the first trying both of these, I would say they are the same. There not much of a difference.
Depending on the lenses, like astigmatism, it’s just because the lenses are expensive and the yearly ones are actually cheaper. Also, when speaking of color contacts, yearlies are the ones that carry the best color. Also, daily lenses are too thin, may come out of the eyes on a blink, and they are just not as good of a material as the others. But then again, for each their own.
Well I have astigmatism in both eyes and had a heck of a time trying to find soft lenses that would even fit my eyes. I tried hard lenses and they work just fine. And they can last for years. My last pair lasted four years before I lost one. Saved me a lot of money that way.
One day disposable contacts end up being more convenient, more comfortable, less trouble, and best of all they are safer and healthier than reusable contacts, but they are also much costlier.
Generally speaking the longer a pair lasts the cheaper they become and the more problems that are experienced.
Hi. I am an optometrist’s assistant (I am the girl that puffs your eyes with air during your eye exam :] ), and I’ve tried just about all types and brands of contact lenses. I can easily answer this for you!
Daily contacts are definitely more expensive. Personally, I do not find them to be any more comfortable than the 2-week Acuvue Oasys lenses that I wear. Although, some people that have very sensitive eyes that are prone to getting infections seem to have a lot more luck with the dailies.
2-week lenses are what I have always worn for the past 9 years. And I’ve always liked the brand Acuvue the best. The Acuvue Oasys are pretty pricey, but oh-so comfortable! Right up there with the dailies. About even. Sooo moist! But they are pricey. You can try other 2week Acuvue lenses like Acuvue Advance, or Acuvue 2, they are older versions and not as expensive.
Monthly contacts. I hate them, I feel like they are scratchy and dry, no matter what brand I try. You can wear them for a month straight, and you can get ones made my Ciba that you can even sleep in. I find that the age group of 13-21 seem to like these. I think just for the ease in the fact that you never have to put them in or take them out.
Yearly lenses are the hard lenses (RGP’s). VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. rarely prescribed. People that wear these generally have very uncommonly shaped eyes, such as people with an extremely high astigmatism.
Lastly- all of these lenses are healthy for your eyes as long as you WEAR THEM PROPERLY and THROW THEM AWAY when you are supposed to. they are made with different oxygen levels to accomodate you and how you will be wearing your lenses!
PS-as a comfort matter, every single person and set of eyes if different! it is really just a matter of personal preference!
